33 questions with Dave Bayley from Glass Animals

Thanks to Zoom, we had the opportunity to talk with the leading man of the British indie rock band about music, fun skills and weird habits. Even so we had the chance to meet his dog too, who almost stole the show during the interview.

1. Your favorite stuffed animal, which you took with yourself everywhere as a child?
I had an alligator. I still have it, it actually sits on a shelf right next to my bed. But recently my dog tried to eat it, so now there is a big hole in it.

2. Which song takes you back to your childhood immediately?
Piggies from The Beatles.

3. What was your favorite movie as a little boy?
I really liked a lot of Disney movies, probably The Jungle Book.

4. What was the best advice your mother gave you?
„Stand up straight.” Thats all she ever says to me.

5. A person can sweep you off your feet right away, if they…
give me brownies, chocolate brownies.

6. This is how you drink your coffee:
I have a double espresso and I just pour a tiny bit of milk into it.

7. If you could eat only one thing from now on, what would it be?
Dumplings or sushi. Cake, I dont know. Cereal! It would be cereal. (laughs)

8. What is your most useless talent?
I can flip pancakes lots of time, once I made it to 12 flips.

9. What is your most fun skill?
I can moonwalk, sort of. But not very well.

10. What is the boldest thing youve ever done?
Ive done a lot of stupid things. But the boldest? I dont know. I went crowd-surfing once and tried to get all the way to the back of the venue, and I regret it.

11. What makes you laugh any time?
Videos about cats, who are doing something funny, then dogs doing funny things on the Internet always makes me laugh.

12. On your birthdays, you always insist that…
I get to sleep in.

13. What is your secret hobby?
While Im in meetings with people I pretend taking notes, but I actually draw cartoons of their face.

14. What is the most useless thing you have ever spent money on?
I bought a lamp, that looks like a mushroom, but it doesnt work. It’s never turned on, so its pretty useless.

15. If you could catch a goldfish now, what would be your wish?
Id wish that my dog, Woody could talk and all animals could talk, that would be cool.

16. If your dog could speak, what would he say?
He would probably say: „I’m hungry, can you give me some beef?” 

17. What is the coolest trick you have ever taught to your dog?
Im trying to teach him to do all sorts of things, but right now hes learing how to give fist bumps.

18. What is the biggest misconception about british people?
Every stereotype of British people is true. Theres no misconceptions at all. (laughs)

19. Star Wars or Harry Potter?
Star Wars.

20. Would you join to the dark side?
Yeah.

21. Name one habit you wish you could break!
Fidgeting and twitching a lot.

22. If your life would be a movie, what would be the title?
Dave: Idiot?

23. Who would play you?
Maybe Meryl Streep. Shes amazing. Shes my favourite.

24.What is the weirdest thing youve ever found about yourself on Google?
Well, I got scared to Google myself, and I never do it, but my mum sends me things. All sorts of things that she always sends me in text. She says „I found this on Google, is it true?” And it‘s never true.

25. What is the last photo, you took with your phone?
I took a picture of my dog, Woody this morning.

26. What is your first memory about music?
My first memory about music is probably playing with some of my mums records. She used to have some vinyl and they used to play it on the machine. I didn’t even really know how it worked or what music it was. It was probably a record from The Beatles. I just scratched them.

27. Music has healing power because…
it makes you feel less alone when you’re feeling lonely.

28. What is the first song you learned to play on the guitar?
I think the first song I learned playing on the guitar was probably Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) from Green Day, like everyone else.

29. Name two words, that your fellow musicians would use to describe you?
Annoying and hyperactive.

30. Which is the better muse? Love or heartbreak?
Heartbreak.

31. Name one word, you like to write in a song?
Banana.

32. The best thing about being a musician?
I get to travel around the world with my friends and meeting people.

33. Your biggest hope for this year is…
to the world to get rid of Covid-19 and world peace. And for our band it would be great if we could play some of the best shows weve ever played.
